The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has commenced the bid-opening process for the 2023/2024 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Intervention Projects, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and quality service delivery in the basic education sector.
The exercise followed the close of bid submissions on Tuesday, marking the conclusion of the procurement phase and the commencement of evaluation in line with established public procurement procedures.
A total of 75 contractors participated in the bidding process, submitting proposals for consideration under various intervention projects. Successful contractors will be announced upon completion of the evaluation exercise.
Speaking during the bid-opening ceremony, the Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, described the process as a critical milestone in ensuring fairness, openness, and credibility in government procurement.
He noted that the projects were publicly advertised and that adequate time was provided for interested contractors to submit their bids in accordance with due process.
Dr. Shittu further stated that Lagos State continues to strengthen its procurement system through the adoption of technology, which has enhanced transparency by allowing stakeholders to monitor proceedings in real time.
He urged successful bidders to prioritise quality execution and adhere strictly to approved timelines and project specifications.
According to him, contractors must ensure full compliance with standards throughout the implementation phase, as the state remains committed to delivering durable and high-quality educational infrastructure.
He also disclosed that LASUBEB would deploy qualified engineers and technical experts to closely supervise all ongoing projects to guarantee compliance with approved standards.
The Chief Procurement Officer of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency (PPA), Ogundare Akintayo, confirmed that all submitted bids would undergo thorough evaluation, after which successful contractors would be announced.
He explained that where deficiencies are identified, relevant ministries and agencies would communicate observations for necessary corrections, while sanctions would be applied to contractors who fail to meet procurement requirements.
Representing the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the State Coordinator, Sunday Joshua, commended Lagos State for its adoption of electronic procurement processes, describing it as a significant improvement over traditional paper-based systems.
He noted that the digitalised approach has enhanced transparency, increased efficiency, and strengthened public confidence in the execution of education-related projects.
Joshua added that UBEC and LASUBEB would jointly monitor the implementation of the intervention projects to ensure adherence to quality standards and effective utilisation of public funds.
He further urged contractors to deliver durable and impactful projects that would improve teaching and learning outcomes across public schools in Lagos State.
The UBEC intervention projects are expected to support the development of educational infrastructure across the state, including classroom construction, renovation of existing facilities, and other initiatives aimed at strengthening basic education delivery.
