416 Scholars Worldwide Reject Use of AI in Qualitative Research, Citing Ethical and Methodological Concerns

A global coalition of 416 qualitative researchers from 38 countries has declared its formal opposition to the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in reflexive qualitative research — including reflexive thematic analysis and phenomenological studies. The declaration, led by Tanisha Jowsey of Bond University (Australia), argues that GenAI’s simulated intelligence cannot replicate the depth of meaning-making essential to qualitative research. In a statement issued this week, the group emphasised that qualitative inquiry must remain a fundamentally human endeavour — one grounded in context, interpretation, and empathy. They warned that reliance on AI-driven tools risks undermining these core values and could perpetuate biases, especially against marginalised voices. Punch Newspapers

Beyond methodological objections, the scholars raised serious ethical and environmental concerns. They pointed to the substantial ecological cost of AI — including the energy consumption of data centers, potential environmental degradation, and inequitable labour practices, particularly in the Global South. Leading voices in the protest include, among others, Virginia Braun (University of Auckland), Victoria Clarke (University of the West of England), Deborah Lupton (University of Canberra), and Michelle Fine (City University of New York) — all asserting that GenAI’s algorithmic processes cannot replace nuanced human judgment in reflexive qualitative methods.
