Kano State has recorded the highest number of candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).

According to figures released by NECO, a total of 74,413 candidates in Kano met the five-credit benchmark. The state was followed by Lagos with 72,496 candidates and Oyo with 55,543 candidates.

The result marks the second consecutive year Kano has recorded the highest number of candidates meeting the five-credit requirement in the NECO examination.

Reacting to the performance, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, congratulated the students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders for their contributions to the achievement.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Yusuf said the result showed that the state’s sustained investment in education was producing measurable outcomes.

The governor said his administration would continue to prioritise education through increased funding, improved learning facilities, teacher recruitment and training, scholarships and support for indigent students.

Yusuf disclosed that the state government spent more than N4.4 billion in 2026 to sponsor candidates for the Senior School Certificate Examination, particularly indigent students, as part of efforts to remove financial barriers to participation.

He said the investment also covered classroom renovation, recruitment and training of teachers, provision of learning materials and uniforms, as well as scholarship programmes.

“Our government spent more than N4.4bn in 2026 to sponsor candidates for the Senior School Certificate Examination, particularly indigent students, to remove financial barriers to participation,” Yusuf said.

The governor added that the state’s education budget had remained one of the largest components of its annual expenditure under his administration.

According to the statement, education received N168.35 billion, representing 31 per cent of Kano State’s 2025 budget. For 2026, the sector was allocated N405.35 billion, accounting for about 30 per cent of the state’s N1.48 trillion budget.

Yusuf said the government would sustain its interventions in the sector, with the broader objective of equipping young people with the knowledge and skills required for higher education, employment, innovation and leadership.

“This achievement belongs to our students, teachers, parents and the good people of Kano State,” the governor said.

The governor’s spokesperson also disclosed that the latest annual school census recorded more than five million schoolchildren in Kano State, highlighting the scale of the government’s responsibilities in the education sector.
