The Senate of the Yakubu Gowon University has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates previously issued to 15 former students following a series of disciplinary infractions.
The decision was taken at the institution’s 191st regular Senate meeting after extensive deliberation on the findings and recommendations presented by the Student Disciplinary Committee.
In a statement released by the Acting Director of Information, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the university disclosed that the offences committed by the affected students included threats to life, physical assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft and involvement in cult-related activities.
Other violations cited were possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of Ordinary Level examination results and failure to honour repeated invitations to appear before the disciplinary committee.
The Senate further approved the revocation of certificates belonging to 15 former students who reportedly ignored multiple summons during the investigative process, a move the university described as necessary to protect the integrity of its academic awards.
Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of wrongdoing after investigations found no evidence to substantiate the allegations against them. An additional 33 students received formal warnings for offences such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.
Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a secure academic environment. He stressed that the university would continue to enforce its regulations decisively in order to preserve order and uphold the credibility of its academic system.
