Why we’re shutting down polytechnics nationwide on Monday — ASUP

Abubakar J. Abdullah outlined the union's key demands, including:

Swift release of the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment Intervention fund.
Immediate implementation of the approved 25/35% salary review for all public polytechnics and payment of accrued arrears.
Resolution of the long-standing CONTISS-15 migration arrears for lower cadre staff.
Release of outstanding promotion arrears.
Improved funding for polytechnics.
Settlement of unpaid allowances.

He stressed that these issues must be addressed to tackle the systemic challenges undermining the polytechnic education sector.

Abubakar J. Abdullah expressed disappointment over the Federal Government's failure to act on the union's demands despite the expiration of the 15-day ultimatum.

“As the deadline has passed, the government’s silence and inaction leave us no choice but to consider a total shutdown of polytechnic institutions nationwide, scheduled for December 2, 2024, if these pressing concerns remain unaddressed,” he stated.

He emphasized that the survival and quality of Nigeria’s education system hinge on the government’s responsiveness, adding, “A strong education sector is essential for the nation's future, and we can no longer afford to compromise on these critical issues.”

Abdullah called on the Federal Government to initiate meaningful dialogue with the union and take decisive steps to address the challenges to avert the impending strike.
