Secretary-General of the Organisation of Southern Cooperation (OSC), Manssor Bin-Mussalam, has urged African education authorities to redesign school curricula, shifting emphasis from problem-solving to problem-posing as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the global learning landscape.

Speaking in an interview with *The PUNCH* in Abuja, Bin-Mussalam warned that traditional problem-solving models are increasingly inadequate in the age of AI, stressing that critical thinking and the ability to frame questions will define future success.

“I propose that we move our education systems from problem-solving to problem-posing,” he said. “With AI tools like ChatGPT, two people can ask the same question but get vastly different results. The difference lies in how well they framed the problem.”

He noted that while AI excels in translating languages like French and English, it performs poorly with African languages because the systems were not trained with local data. This, he argued, highlights the urgent need to prepare young people to design AI solutions that reflect their cultural and societal realities.

Bin-Mussalam explained that the OSC’s vision goes beyond immediate fixes, focusing instead on long-term reforms that equip Africa’s youth to lead in the global digital economy. He added that Nigeria’s ongoing talks on establishing a technological hub align with this vision, as the hub would serve as a platform for innovation, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development.

“We should impart to our youth the ability not just to answer questions, but to ask the right ones, analyse society, and problematise issues to resolve them,” he stressed.

The OSC, established in 2020 with headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, works to promote South–South cooperation among countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.
