The management of an Ondo State–owned university has appealed to the state government for an annual subvention of ₦12 billion, stating that sustained funding is critical to unlocking the institution’s full potential and positioning it among globally competitive universities.
University authorities made the appeal while highlighting the growing demands of modern higher education, including infrastructure development, staff welfare, research funding and the maintenance of academic standards. They noted that the current level of funding is insufficient to meet the expectations of a 21st-century university operating in a competitive global academic environment.
According to the institution’s leadership, increased financial support would enable the university to expand its academic programmes, upgrade laboratories and learning facilities, attract and retain high-quality faculty, and enhance research output capable of addressing national and global challenges.
The management emphasized that adequate funding would also improve students’ learning experiences and strengthen the university’s capacity to produce graduates equipped with globally relevant skills and knowledge.
The call for enhanced subvention comes amid broader discussions on the funding crisis facing public universities in Nigeria, with education stakeholders repeatedly urging governments to prioritize higher education as a catalyst for sustainable development.
University officials expressed optimism that with enhanced government support, the institution could achieve its vision of becoming a world-class centre of teaching, research and innovation.
