NAU Appoints Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie as Substantive Vice-Chancellor

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, has officially named Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie as the institution’s substantive Vice-Chancellor. The announcement was made on Sunday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Olugbenga Kukoyi, during a press briefing in Abuja.

Kukoyi described the selection process as “thorough, credible, and transparent,” noting that Anyaehie emerged as the most qualified candidate after a rigorous screening.

A distinguished scholar, administrator, and medical professional, Prof. Anyaehie brings nearly two decades of academic excellence to the role. A specialist in Medical Physiology and Clinical Measurement, he has spent years teaching at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

Anyaehie obtained his MBBS degree from Abia State University, Uturu in 1998, followed by a master’s degree in 2004, a PhD in 2009, and a Master of Public Health in 2011. Born on November 16, 1971, he attained full professorship more than 12 years ago at the age of 41.

His leadership profile spans several academic institutions. He has served on the governing councils of two universities, and has been an active member of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Senate for over a decade. He has held key offices including Head of Department, Director of Research and Publications, and most recently, Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine.

A respected scholar within and beyond Nigeria, Anyaehie has served as external examiner to multiple medical schools and the West African Postgraduate Medical College, and has supervised over 40 postgraduate students—four of whom are now professors.

He was the pioneer Provost of the College of Medicine at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and has held international research positions as Visiting Scholar at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

With more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, he is recognised as the 141st Inaugural Lecturer of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His administrative experience covers public, private, national, and international academic environments.

Beyond academia, Anyaehie has worked extensively with international donor bodies, Nigerian government agencies, and the National Assembly. He is a lead consultant on health development, strategic planning, and health policy for multiple institutions and governments, including Imo State University, Abia State University, and FUTO.

He is also a member of several professional bodies including SOGON, ASRM, ICS, WAME, CSE, and the Physiological Society of Nigeria.

An active community leader, Anyaehie has served in several capacities such as pioneer chairman of the University of Nigeria College of Medicine Cooperative Society, Provincial President of the Christian Men’s Fellowship (Enugu Province), National Executive member of Federal Government College Okigwe, and global coordinator of the Abia State University Medical Alumni Association. He currently serves as President of Nkwerre Aborigines Union, Enugu chapter.

Prof. Anyaehie is married with children.
