The students' body has expressed its support for the institution’s governing council, stating that it agrees with the decision to establish a committee to investigate recent developments.
According to the statement, students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have suffered from inadequate welfare services, including delays in fumigating the university’s 27 hostels, allegedly due to misconduct by the Registrar.
“We are deeply concerned about the ongoing administrative crisis at UNN, where the actions of the university’s Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Celine Nnebedum, have significantly undermined student welfare and disrupted essential development projects.
“Reports from students and other stakeholders indicate a pattern of misconduct by the Registrar, which has negatively affected the smooth operation of the university.
“Further investigations suggest that the Registrar has also obstructed the execution of key university projects. These deliberate actions have severely impacted the administration and constitute a clear abuse of office.
“It is particularly troubling that the Registrar attempted to impose an unfair financial penalty of nearly ₦250,000 on students for late file submissions. This decision was only reversed following the timely intervention of the Acting Vice Chancellor.
“We fully support the decision of the UNN Governing Council to establish a committee to investigate these issues and stand behind the Governing Council Chairman, recognizing his integrity and commitment to the university’s administration. Additionally, students from the UNN campus have reached out to us, emphasizing the need for fairness in this matter. If this situation turns out to be a targeted attack on the Vice Chancellor, appropriate corrective measures must be taken to uphold the university’s leadership integrity.
“In light of these serious allegations, we demand a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the Registrar’s obstruction of student-focused projects. We also call for the immediate issuance of all pending contract letters for projects already approved by the Tenders’ Board. Measures must be implemented to prevent further administrative sabotage, ensuring that student welfare and university development are not compromised by personal interests.
“The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is a prestigious institution, and we cannot allow its progress to be hindered by administrative misconduct. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urges the Governing Council, the Federal Ministry of Education, and other relevant authorities to take immediate action to restore accountability and ensure that students receive the quality education and welfare they deserve,” the statement concluded.
“One of the most concerning instances of administrative sabotage was the prolonged delay in fumigating the university’s 27 hostels, despite severe pest infestations, including bedbugs, rats, mosquitoes, and even snakes, which posed serious health risks to students. The fumigation was eventually carried out in January 2025.”
