The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has formally petitioned the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs over reports of harassment, discrimination, and inhumane treatment of Nigerian students and citizens residing in India, particularly in Mumbai.
In the complaint, NANS raised concerns about alleged racial profiling, arbitrary arrests, visa renewal challenges, inflated visa fees, and restrictions limiting Nigerians’ access to housing, business, and employment opportunities. The petition, signed by the National Vice President for Special Duties, Comrade Ahmad Abubakar Mallawa, also highlighted inadequate consular support for detained Nigerians and delays in replacing expired or lost passports.
While recognising that individuals guilty of offences should face legal consequences, NANS emphasised that entire Nigerian communities should not be subjected to collective punishment or discriminatory treatment.
The association called for immediate and transparent investigations into the reported abuses, improved consular access for affected citizens, fair visa processing, humane deportation procedures, and equal access to accommodation and commercial activities.
NANS further warned that failure to address these concerns within seven days could trigger lawful advocacy actions nationwide. The student body stressed that its demands are rooted in the pursuit of justice, fairness, and protection for Nigerian students abroad.
This development adds to ongoing interventions by NANS concerning the welfare and safety of Nigerians in the diaspora, as the association continues to urge the Federal Government to prioritise diplomatic support and protection for its citizens overseas.
