Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, will return to duty on Wednesday following the suspension of a two-week strike that began on July 31.
The decision was reached on Monday during a congress of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) — comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
The strike had paralysed all academic and administrative activities, including the suspension of the 2024/2025 second-semester examinations, which were due to commence on August 4.
Multiple sources at Monday’s meeting confirmed the resolution to resume work, with JAC expected to issue a formal communiqué outlining the conditions for suspending the industrial action.
The breakthrough followed last Thursday’s meeting between JAC representatives, LASU management, and Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat. The parties agreed that the government would pay 12 months of the 23-month arrears from the 25–35 per cent salary increments owed to staff. Nine months’ payment will be shouldered by the state, while LASU management will cover the remaining three months. The payments will be spread between August and December 2025.
However, the deal initially met resistance from some staff members, who demanded full payment of all arrears in five instalments starting August 2025, accusing JAC leaders of signing an “insufficient” agreement without broad consultation.
In a statement after the impasse, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, urged workers to accept the offer in the interest of students and the institution’s reputation. She noted the management’s past achievements, including 100 per cent Christmas bonuses, prompt promotions, and clearance of long-pending advancement backlogs.
