A professor in the Faculty of Education at Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Biodun Akinpelu, has called for a renewed commitment to quality education as a lasting tool for mental liberation, creativity, and societal transformation.

Speaking as guest lecturer at the 2025 graduation, speech, and prize-giving ceremony of Christ the King International College, Ife Odan, Osun State, Akinpelu lamented that the state of education in Nigeria has been severely undermined by years of economic decline and poor policy direction.

He described education as the world’s most reliable instrument for empowering minds and building sustainable societies, but warned that in Nigeria, its value is being eroded at all levels.

“I have spent decades advocating for quality education as the foundation for meaningful personal and national development,” Akinpelu said. “I am a product of a system that produced exceptional minds who have shaped the economic, political, and social landscape both locally and globally. Sadly, our leaders’ current focus on education and national development is highly distorted. The future looks bleak.”

The don expressed concern over the rising wave of youth involvement in social vices, including fraud, armed robbery, prostitution, kidnapping, and terrorism, which he described as evidence of a loss of societal values and moral judgment.

He urged teachers to create interactive, real-world learning environments that encourage active participation, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. Strategies such as debates, drama, group projects, and peer interactions, he noted, could boost student competence and confidence across subjects.

Commending the school’s proprietor, management, and staff for their dedication, Akinpelu wished the graduating students a future marked by peace, progress, and enduring hope.
