The College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Gidan Waya chapter, Kaduna State, has called off its three-week-old strike following assurances from the state government to meet key demands concerning salary structure and retirement benefits.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Kafanchan, the union’s chairman, Dr. Christopher Yerima, said the decision was reached after a meeting with Governor Uba Sani on October 17, where the government pledged to implement 70 percent of the CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure starting this month.
Yerima recalled that the union embarked on an indefinite strike on September 30, in compliance with the directive of the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna State (JUTIKS), to protest the non-implementation of the agreed salary adjustment and the 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff.
“We are pleased to announce that following our meeting with the governor, the government has committed to implementing 70 percent of the CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure with effect from October,” Yerima said.
“Additionally, the government has agreed to implement the 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff.”
The chairman commended members for their resilience and solidarity during the strike, describing their unity as instrumental in achieving progress.
The industrial action, which affected academic activities at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, and the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, was part of a broader struggle led by JUTIKS to compel the state government to honour the agreements reached in August 2025 on unified remuneration and welfare improvements.
With the suspension of the strike, normal academic activities are expected to resume across affected institutions.
