The allegations against Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, as outlined in a communiqué dated November 25, 2024, by SSANU branch chairman Benjamin Faleye and secretary Ayomikun Aluko, include accusations of reversing appointments, reassigning teaching staff to non-teaching roles, sexual harassment, victimisation of a union member, staff intimidation, administrative recklessness, and financial mismanagement. The communiqué also called for an investigation into the university's finances under Professor Fasina's leadership.
However, a coalition of unions at FUOYE, comprising SSANU, NASU, CONUA, and NAAT, has dismissed these claims as unfounded, politically motivated, and lacking credible evidence. In a response signed by leaders, including Comrade Ayeni Abraham (NASU Chairman) and Comrade Dr. Ademola Akinsorotan (CONUA Coordinator), the unions alleged that the accusations were part of a smear campaign by detractors aiming to discredit Professor Fasina ahead of the 2025 Vice-Chancellorship race.
The unions highlighted Professor Fasina’s accomplishments, which they believe have intimidated his critics. These achievements include:
- The promotion of over 500 non-teaching staff and 100 teaching staff, surpassing previous administrations' records.
- Enhanced staff welfare through the payment of hazard allowances, provision of subsidised transport, and remunerated online teaching programmes.
- Institutional growth, with FUOYE becoming the fourth most subscribed university in Nigeria (JAMB data) and securing multimillion-dollar research grants.
- Completion of over 90 infrastructural projects under his tenure.
The unions also defended Professor Fasina’s financial transparency, citing a forensic audit commissioned by the university’s Governing Council, led by Dr. M. Lawal Yahuza, which validated the administration’s financial integrity.
Additionally, they referenced his recognition with an Award of Excellence by the Ekiti State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and commended the recent transparent University Congregation poll conducted on November 13, 2024.
The coalition urged the public and stakeholders to disregard the allegations and continue supporting Professor Fasina’s transformative administration, credited with significantly advancing FUOYE's reputation and standing.
