FG Urged to Reform Immigration Service for Improved Efficiency, Structure

Ile-Ife, Nigeria – October 15, 2025 – A Professor of Migration and Development Sociology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Adebusuyi Adeniran, has called on the Federal Government to rebrand and reform the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to enhance its structure, operations, and responsibilities.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prof. Adeniran emphasized that the NIS plays a crucial role in managing migration and national security, hence the need for a comprehensive overhaul to align it with global best practices.

He noted that beyond operational restructuring, the government should integrate migration studies into the national curriculum—from primary to tertiary levels—to promote public awareness and understanding of migration issues.

“Migration is a major driver of development and should be treated as such. Incorporating it into the educational system will help young Nigerians understand its opportunities and challenges,” Adeniran said.

He added that a rebranded and well-structured immigration service would not only improve border management but also enhance Nigeria’s global image and migration governance.
