FG Denies Abandoning Nigerian Scholarship Students in Morocco

The clarification was issued on Tuesday in Abuja through a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo. She noted that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, affirmed that no Nigerian student on a valid federal scholarship has been neglected.

Alausa explained that all beneficiaries under the Bilateral Education Scholarship (BES) Programme who enrolled before 2024 have received their entitlements up to the 2024 budget year, in line with government commitments. He acknowledged that any temporary delays in outstanding payments are due to fiscal constraints, adding that the Ministry of Education is working closely with the Ministry of Finance to address them promptly.

He also debunked claims that new bilateral scholarship awards were issued in October 2025 or afterwards, insisting that documents circulating online to support such claims are fake and unauthenticated. According to him, the Federal Government had discontinued funding for new bilateral scholarships abroad following a policy review that confirmed Nigerian tertiary institutions now have the capacity to offer the affected programmes locally.

“Only scholarships fully funded by foreign governments are currently being supported, with financial responsibilities borne by the host countries. Nonetheless, the Federal Government remains fully committed to students already enrolled under previous arrangements and will continue to support them until completion of their programmes,” Alausa stated.

He further disclosed that students who wish to discontinue their studies abroad may apply to return to Nigeria, where they will be reintegrated into appropriate institutions, with the government covering their return travel expenses.

Alausa reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to reforming the scholarship system, promoting transparency, eliminating inefficiencies, and ensuring responsible use of public funds, while cautioning against misinformation capable of undermining trust in the education sector.
