Akure, Ondo State — The Consul General has called for a renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s economic and cultural partnerships through education, emphasizing that the professionalisation of teaching must be accompanied by improved working conditions and structured career pathways for teachers.
Speaking at the National Council on Education (NCE) Conference in Akure, the Consul General underscored the importance of recognizing teachers as central to national transformation.
“A teacher who feels valued will, in turn, inspire students to value learning,” he said. “This is the chain of transformation that builds great nations.”
He described education as the foundation of national progress, acknowledging the complex challenges confronting the sector. These challenges, he noted, cannot be tackled in isolation but require collaborative efforts among all stakeholders — from federal, state, and local governments to private sector players, development partners, civil society, and local communities.
Highlighting the pivotal role of the National Council on Education, the Consul General said the platform provides a vital mechanism for policy harmonization and collaborative planning across Nigeria’s education landscape.
“The National Council on Education provides a unique forum for such collaboration,” he explained. “Here, we harmonize perspectives, review progress, and agree on policy directions that guide implementation across the nation.”
Declaring the conference open, the Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning with the Federal Ministry of Education’s reform agenda in pursuit of accessible and quality education for all.
Represented by his deputy, Mr. Olayide Adelami, the governor said Ondo State had recorded significant progress in reshaping its educational system under its Seven-Point Agenda, known as OUR EASE.
Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the state’s policies align with the resolutions of the National Council on Education and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
“Our government remains committed to investing in teacher training, educational infrastructure, and digital learning,” the governor said. “We must prepare our students for the demands of a fast-changing global economy.”
He commended the collaborative framework fostered by the NCE, describing it as vital for ensuring policy coherence and sustainable development in Nigeria’s education sector.
The conference, which brought together education commissioners, policymakers, and development partners, is expected to produce actionable recommendations to enhance the quality and delivery of education at all levels nationwide.
