Benue SUBEB Launches ICT Training to Revolutionize Teaching in Basic Schools

In a decisive move to bridge the digital divide in classroom instruction, the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has kicked off a four-day intensive capacity-building workshop for teachers across the state.

The workshop, currently underway at Government College, Makurdi, is anchored on two innovative training modules: Stimulating Teacher Resourcefulness in Digital Education (STRIDE) and Supporting Pedagogical Rigour in Networked Teaching (SPRINT). The initiative is designed to empower basic school educators with the skills and confidence required to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into everyday teaching.

In a statement signed by the Board’s Information Officer, Emmanuella Akese, the Executive Chairman of Benue SUBEB, Dr. Grace Adagba, described the programme as a strategic and timely intervention to modernize classroom instruction. According to her, the move reflects the Board’s commitment to preparing teachers for 21st-century learning.

“This training marks a pivotal shift in how we equip our teachers to thrive in a digitally-driven world,” Adagba said. “We are not only enhancing their competencies, but also transforming the way learning happens in our classrooms. Digital fluency is no longer optional—it is essential.”

Adagba also commended the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for his steadfast support to the basic education sector, particularly his vision to establish digital libraries in public schools—a move she said would further boost the state’s transition to tech-enhanced learning.

Resource persons at the workshop, including education technologists Dr. Nasela Pila, Dr. Erdoo Kuhwa, and Dr. Jackson Ode, underscored the need for teachers to maintain a robust online presence and adapt to modern platforms like WhatsApp for live instruction. They also explored the pedagogical foundations of digital education, encouraging teachers to see technology as a tool for deeper engagement rather than a distraction.

“We are empowering teachers to become digital educators,” said Dr. Kuhwa. “The expectation is that these teachers will cascade their knowledge to students, creating a ripple effect that enhances digital literacy across the board.”

The workshop’s curriculum includes a wide range of practical modules: Word Processing, Microsoft PowerPoint, effective use of search engines, synchronous and asynchronous teaching techniques, and strategies for promoting independent learning.

Teachers in attendance expressed excitement over the hands-on training. Abya Tertsuwa of LGEA Primary School, Nyom in Buruku LGA, and Ann Beda of St. Francis Primary School, Aliade in Gwer East LGA, praised the initiative, calling it a game-changer.

“We’re eager to apply what we’ve learned,” they said. “This training is equipping us with the tools we need to make learning more interactive and impactful for our pupils.”

As Benue charts a new course in digital education, this capacity-building workshop marks a foundational step toward transforming its public schools into hubs of tech-savvy, globally competitive learning.
