The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Northwest University branch, has called on the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately implement provisions of the 2025 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government concerning staff allowances.
The union made the appeal in a statement issued on Monday and jointly signed by its Chairperson, Mansur Sa’id, and Secretary, Yusuf Ahmed-Gwarzo.
ASUU expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA), both of which were approved for university staff under the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.
The union urged the Kano State Government to domesticate and enforce the provisions of the agreement, stressing that timely implementation would help improve staff welfare and strengthen the higher education system.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Northwest University Branch, urges the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately domesticate and implement the provisions of the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement relating to staff allowances,” the statement read.
According to the union, its congress meeting held on June 3 reviewed the status of the allowances and expressed dissatisfaction that no significant progress had been made, despite expectations that implementation would commence in January 2025.
ASUU disclosed that several letters and communications had been sent to the university administration and the Kano State Government on the issue, but these efforts had yet to yield the desired results.
The union emphasized that staff welfare remains critical to the stability, productivity and growth of the university system, warning that continued delays in implementing approved entitlements were placing unnecessary financial burdens on workers.
“Delay in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily creates hardship for staff and leads to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action,” the statement noted.
ASUU therefore called for the immediate implementation of both the CATA and SAA allowances, arguing that fulfilling commitments made to university employees is essential for maintaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in tertiary education.
The union also commended stakeholders who have continued to engage government authorities on matters affecting staff welfare and urged them to intensify their efforts to ensure a swift resolution.
Reaffirming its commitment to dialogue and constructive engagement, ASUU expressed optimism that the government would act promptly in the interest of staff, students and the broader university community.
The union maintained that the implementation of the allowances would not only improve workers’ welfare but also contribute significantly to the development and sustainability of Kano State’s higher education sector.
