Following the intervention of Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has called off its recent strike.
The union praised Governor Sani for his prompt response and leadership in addressing the issues that led to the strike. They noted that his approach marks a departure from previous times when members faced victimization for participating in lawful industrial actions.
In a statement titled "Suspension of Strike Action", signed by ASUU-KASU Chairperson Dr. Peter Adamu on Monday, the union explained that its congress met on Saturday, February 22, 2025, to review the Kaduna State Government’s proposals. After extensive discussions, the congress decided to suspend the strike, contingent upon a formal agreement between the government and the union.
The statement highlighted that the government demonstrated goodwill by immediately releasing funds to pay 60% of the withheld salaries from September 2017 and settling the SIWES supervision allowance for five academic sessions.
Additionally, the government committed to a timeline for settling outstanding payments, including five months’ withheld salaries (May–September 2022), promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittances (2009–2019), death benefits, and Group Life Assurance. The administration also pledged to implement a wage award and grant autonomy to the university.
Expressing gratitude, the union acknowledged Governor Sani's decisive role in resolving the dispute and commended university management, the Commissioner of Education, the Commissioner of Sports, the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, and other stakeholders for facilitating a swift resolution.
They also extended their appreciation to students and parents for their patience and support, as well as to union members for their unwavering solidarity throughout the strike.
With approval from the National Executive Council (NEC), ASUU-KASU has directed all academic staff to resume work and continue contributing to the university community.
