The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has emerged as a dominant force at the ongoing NUGA 2025 Scrabble Championships hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS). The event, which brought together the finest wordsmiths from universities across Nigeria, has delivered intense competition and remarkable performances.
In the men’s singles category, Abasido Bassey of the University of Uyo clinched the gold medal, while his teammate Prestige Archibong secured silver, making it a double podium finish for the institution. Amadi Gift from Rivers State University completed the top three with bronze.
In the women’s singles, Funmilola Kelani of the University of Ibadan (UI) emerged champion, taking home gold, followed by Ekajeh Talent of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) with silver, and Gowon Precious from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria earning bronze.
The men’s doubles event saw the University of Benin pair, Oboro Alfred and Oboro Alexious, claim gold, while Bassey and Archibong of UNIUYO settled for silver. Kingsley Enyi and Benjamin Onuh of UI bagged the bronze medal.
In the women’s doubles, Funmilola Kelani continued her impressive run, partnering with Barakat Malik to secure another gold for the University of Ibadan. The Ekajeh sisters, Talent and Excel, representing the University of Benin, won silver, while Blessing Ola and Hauwa Abdullahi of UNIJOS clinched bronze.
Kelani’s dominant performance — winning two gold medals in both singles and doubles — established her as one of the standout athletes of the tournament and propelled UI to the top of the Scrabble medal standings.
The University of Uyo also impressed with three medals, including two golds, while UNIBEN’s Ekajeh Talent earned double silver for her efforts in both singles and doubles events. Host institution University of Jos celebrated its own podium moment with Blessing Ola’s bronze in the women’s doubles.
Speaking on the success of the event, Chief Olobatoke Aka, Coordinator (Scrabble) for NUGA 2025, commended the athletes and organisers for maintaining high standards throughout the competition.
“The level of play has been exceptional. These student-athletes have shown that Scrabble in Nigerian universities is not just competitive, but world-class,” Aka said.
As the championship draws to a close, anticipation builds for the official medal tally and closing ceremony, with more highlights expected from other sporting categories.
