The 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), ongoing at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), witnessed another electrifying moment as the University of Benin (UNIBEN) emerged champions in the T20 cricket event, clinching the coveted gold medal.

Host institution, UNIJOS, impressed with a solid performance to earn silver, while the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) settled for bronze after a competitive outing.

The cricket field at UNIJOS was alive with cheers and excitement as spectators enjoyed an intense display of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. The fast-paced T20 format kept fans on edge as each side fought to outplay the other in a series of closely contested matches.

In the opening game, UNIJOS got off to a winning start against UNIMAID, combining disciplined bowling with effective batting to delight their home crowd. However, their momentum was halted in the next encounter by a more composed UNIBEN side, whose precision bowling and tactical brilliance proved decisive. UNIBEN chased down their target confidently, setting the tone for what became a dominant campaign.

The final showdown between UNIBEN and UNIMAID showcased the Benin team’s all-round superiority. Their batsmen displayed sharp timing and clinical shot selection, while their bowlers stifled UNIMAID’s scoring opportunities. With an unbeaten record, UNIBEN sealed the gold medal, followed by UNIJOS and UNIMAID taking silver and bronze respectively.

Speaking with The Nigeria Education News, Cricket Coordinator, Joseph Eshua, applauded all participating teams for their discipline and commitment, describing the tournament as a reflection of the growing passion for cricket across Nigerian universities.

Cricket Chairman, Jacob Ajunwa, also congratulated the medalists, noting that the T20 format is instrumental in nurturing young talents. “The energy and skills displayed here show that Nigerian universities are becoming breeding grounds for the next generation of cricket stars,” he said.

The medal ceremony ended on a jubilant note, with players and supporters celebrating amidst chants and excitement. UNIBEN’s triumph has added another golden chapter to the ongoing 27th NUGA Games at UNIJOS — a celebration of unity, competitiveness, and excellence in Nigerian university sports.
