The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has made history with the official launch of its first line of smart devices — the OAK-io smartphone and smartwatch — during a symposium on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics in Clinical Practice held on campus.
The high-profile event attracted academics, innovators, health professionals, and tech enthusiasts, underscoring the university’s growing commitment to harnessing AI for healthcare and education in Africa.
Developed through OAU’s ICT-Driven Knowledge Park initiative, the OAK-io project represents a significant milestone in the university’s drive for technological self-reliance and innovation.
According to the organisers, OAK-io — an acronym for Obafemi Awolowo Knowledge Innovation Orbit — is designed to provide affordable, durable, and AI-integrated devices tailored to Africa’s evolving technological and healthcare needs.
Speaking at the launch, OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the innovation as a “bold step” towards Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda through research-led innovation.
“The OAK-io brand is not just about producing gadgets; it’s about integrating artificial intelligence into everyday learning and healthcare delivery. This innovation places OAU at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution,” he said.
He emphasized that the devices were developed with a focus on data security, affordability, and adaptability to Africa’s climate, ensuring sustainability and reliability for users across the continent.
The symposium also featured expert discussions on the role of AI and robotics in medical diagnosis, patient monitoring, and clinical decision-making. Speakers highlighted the importance of homegrown solutions in addressing healthcare gaps such as inadequate diagnostic tools and shortages of medical specialists.
Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunmilayo Adebayo, Director of the ICT-Driven Knowledge Park, described the OAK-io project as a landmark achievement for indigenous innovation.
“This is a defining moment for Nigeria’s digital health ecosystem. OAU is showing that we can build smart technologies that truly reflect African needs and realities,” she noted.
The event concluded with live demonstrations of the OAK-io devices, which showcased features such as AI-powered health monitoring, educational integration tools, and energy-efficient systems. Attendees applauded OAU for bridging the gap between academic research and real-world technological impact.
