The 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS), delivered a spectacular showcase of athleticism and skill as the swimming events unfolded at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The venue buzzed with excitement as student-athletes from universities across Nigeria battled fiercely in a series of high-energy races that highlighted the growing depth of talent in university sports.
Men’s 50m Breaststroke Final: BIU’s Urounah Victor Clinches Gold
The men’s 50m Breaststroke was one of the most tightly contested races of the day. Urounah Victor from Benson Idahosa University (BIU) emerged victorious, striking gold with a blistering time of 32.28 seconds. His impeccable technique and composure gave him a decisive edge, earning BIU its first top finish of the tournament.
Doulahuman Augustine from Delta State University (DELSU) claimed silver with 34.45 seconds, while Enipiegha Ego of Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) took bronze in 39.50 seconds, displaying grit and consistency.
Other strong finishers included Abubakar Jamiu (AAUA) in fourth place (39.56s), Okenmeka Lawrence (NMU) fifth (43.48s), Alimi Oluwadamilare (UI) sixth (46.73s), and Yu Tommy (ABUAD) seventh (47.62s).
Okafor Chinemeren (FUOYE) and Shitu Abubakar (KASU) finished eighth and ninth respectively, while Monday Israel (AKSU) was disqualified for a rule violation.
Women’s 100m Freestyle: Kimiakigha Joy Extends BIU’s Dominance
The women’s 100m Freestyle event proved equally captivating. Kimiakigha Joy, also representing Benson Idahosa University (BIU), delivered a commanding performance to win gold in 1:09.54, sealing a second gold for her university. Her powerful finish and efficient strokes earned loud cheers from the crowd.
Garry Tamaraudedieneni (DELSU) secured silver with 1:22.12, while Osinaike Shalom (OAU) finished third at 1:27.09, displaying resilience throughout the race.
The University of Ibadan’s Balogun Aishat (1:39.96) and Aloba Esther (1:47.95) placed fourth and fifth respectively, while Sijuola Oluwatobi (EKSU) (2:19.54) and Adebayo Oluwademilade (OAU) (2:38.90) completed the final lineup.
Medals Table: DELSU Maintains Lead with Depth and Consistency
At the close of the swimming events, Delta State University (DELSU) emerged as the overall leader, topping the medals chart with 5 Gold and 5 Silver medals. The institution’s balanced performance across both men’s and women’s categories underscored its dominance in aquatic sports.
Benson Idahosa University (BIU) followed closely in second with 5 Gold medals, driven by standout performances from Urounah Victor and Kimiakigha Joy.
University of Ibadan (UI) and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) shared third and fourth spots respectively, each with 2 Silver medals.
Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) ranked fifth with 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals, while Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) placed sixth (3 Bronze). Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) and Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) completed the table with 2 Bronze and 1 Bronze respectively.
